Te mapa
Kafranbel sits in the uplands of southern Idlib, an area of rolling ground, stony fields and extensive olive groves. From above, the town forms a dense core of streets and houses, with roads leading out in several directions toward neighbouring towns and villages. Beyond the built-up area, the land is divided into small plots and orchards.
The town became widely known during the Syrian conflict for the handwritten banners its residents created, often in English, which carried political and satirical messages and were shared around the world. Those images made a small farming town recognisable far beyond Syria.
A Kafranbel map poster records the town as a place rather than a headline: its streets, the routes connecting it to the surrounding countryside, and the agricultural pattern that has shaped life here for generations. For many families who have left, that layout is a direct link to home.
Houses and lanes crowd together in the centre, forming an irregular, compact fabric typical of the older towns across the Idlib uplands.
Groves and small fields surround the town on the map, creating a fine, broken texture of plots and tracks around the edges of the streets.
Several routes radiate out of Kafranbel toward nearby towns, linking it into a close network of settlements across the southern Idlib countryside.

Koteā ko Kafranbel
For Syrians from Kafranbel, many now living far away, the map is a way to keep the shape of home on the wall. It holds the streets and fields as they are, without commentary.
