Te mapa
Kalaburagi, formerly known as Gulbarga, lies on the Deccan plateau in northern Karnataka. The land is flat and open, and the city grows outward from its historic core around the fort, where the old lanes are narrow and irregular. Newer districts extend along the main roads and the railway in a broader pattern, with open land and water tanks at the edges.
In the fourteenth century the city was the first capital of the Bahmani Sultanate. Its fort encloses the Jama Masjid, notable for a prayer hall covered almost entirely by domes instead of an open courtyard. The city is also a major pilgrimage centre and is home to the dargah of Khwaja Banda Nawaz and the Sharana Basaveshwara temple.
A Kalaburagi map poster is centred on the fort, a large walled enclosure with a moat, surrounded by the dense streets of the old town. From there the map widens into the more orderly outer districts. The result is a composition with a strong focal point and a clear sense of the city's history.
The walled enclosure and its moat form the most distinctive shape on the map, a solid island of history among the surrounding streets.
The streets around the fort and the major shrines are narrow and winding, and they make up the densest, most intricate part of the composition.
Beyond the core, straighter roads and larger blocks spread across the flat Deccan land, with water tanks appearing as small open shapes.
