Vijayapura, long known as Bijapur, was the capital of the Adil Shahi sultanate from the late fifteenth to the late seventeenth century. On a map the old city is enclosed by a long, irregular fortification wall, and many roads still follow its line or pass through its gates. Inside, a smaller citadel marks the former royal quarter.
The city's best-known monument is the Gol Gumbaz, the mausoleum of Mohammed Adil Shah, whose dome is among the largest of its period. On the map it sits within its own walled grounds in the eastern part of the old city, while the Ibrahim Rauza tomb complex lies to the west, set within gardens.
