Te mapa
Kalamariá lies on the southeastern edge of Thessaloniki, along the shore of the Thermaic Gulf. Much of it was built by refugees from Asia Minor, Pontus and eastern Thrace who settled here after 1922, and many neighbourhood names still recall the towns they left behind. On the map it appears as a tightly packed grid of apartment blocks running down to the sea.
The waterfront is the district's defining feature. A long seaside promenade runs past Nea Krini and Aretsou, with cafes, a marina and small fishing harbours, and the headland of Karampournaki pushes out into the gulf. From here the view looks across the water toward the city centre and, on clear days, Mount Olympus.
A Kalamariá map poster shows the fine grain of the district: short, straight streets in regular blocks, the small patches of parks, and the clean curve of the shoreline along the bottom of the frame. Next to the rest of Thessaloniki, it reads as a distinct place with a seaside identity of its own.
A continuous walkway follows the coast through Aretsou and Nea Krini, drawing a long, gentle line where the streets meet the gulf.
A small promontory juts into the Thermaic Gulf, breaking up the shoreline and marking one of the most recognisable points on the district's map.
Blocks laid out for settlers in the 1920s and later built up with apartments give Kalamariá its dense, orderly street pattern.

Koteā ko Kalamariá
For families with roots in Asia Minor and Pontus, Kalamariá carries a particular history, and for many Thessalonians it simply means summer evenings by the sea. A map of its streets and shoreline holds both kinds of memory.
