Te mapa
Kalasin is the capital of Kalasin Province in northeastern Thailand, on the broad, low Khorat Plateau. From above, the town has a compact centre of mostly regular blocks surrounded by a web of roads. Around it the land breaks into small paddy fields separated by earth bunds, which create a fine patchwork on the map.
Water shapes the landscape here. The Lam Pao river passes near the town, and to the north the Lam Pao Dam holds back a wide reservoir that irrigates much of the province. The province is also known for its dinosaur fossils, displayed at the Sirindhorn Museum in Sahatsakhan district, and for the silk weaving of the Phu Tai communities.
A Kalasin map poster shows a typical Isan provincial capital: straight roads leading into a modest centre, ponds and canals scattered through the neighbourhoods, and farmland pressing in from every side. It is a map about scale and flatness, where every small line of water or road carries weight.
The river and its irrigation channels run close to the town, adding curving lines of water to a landscape that is otherwise flat and regular.
The central blocks are laid out fairly evenly around the provincial offices and market, forming a dense core that stands out clearly from the fields.
Around the town, rice fields divide the land into small irregular plots, giving the outer parts of the map a soft, woven texture.
