Kalbatau lies in the Abai Region of eastern Kazakhstan, in open steppe country near the Kalba range, whose name the settlement shares. The word tau means mountain in Kazakh. From above, the place is small and orderly: a modest grid of streets surrounded by very wide, empty land broken only by roads, tracks and seasonal watercourses.
Settlements in this part of Kazakhstan often grew up along transport routes that cross long distances between larger towns. Kalbatau's map reflects that. A main road passes by the built-up area, and side streets branch off in regular rows lined with low houses and yards.
