Kandıra is a district town in the northern part of Kocaeli province, set in wooded hill country between the Gulf of İzmit and the Black Sea. The town itself lies inland, while the district extends north to a long stretch of coastline with sandy beaches, rocky headlands and small coastal villages such as Kefken and Cebeci.
The area is known for a traditional handwoven cloth, Kandıra bezi, and for its agriculture and forests. Compared with the industrial cities around the Gulf of İzmit, this part of Kocaeli has a much more rural and green character, with scattered villages linked by winding roads through the hills.
