Te mapa
Umraniye lies on the Asian side of Istanbul, a few kilometres inland from the Bosphorus, on rolling hills that were largely open land until the second half of the twentieth century. Rapid growth since then has filled that space with housing. On a map the district appears as a dense mosaic of streets that follow the slopes and valleys rather than one regular grid.
Major motorways cross the district and meet in large interchanges, their broad curves standing out against the finer residential streets. In recent decades Umraniye has also become a business centre, with office towers and shopping centres rising along these routes. A metro line running east from Üsküdar links it with the Bosphorus shore and the wider city.
Much of the district's character comes from the contrast between earlier, informally built neighbourhoods and newer planned developments. An Umraniye map poster brings these layers together. It shows a side of Istanbul far from the historic peninsula, where the modern city has grown quickly across the hills and keeps reshaping itself.
Large junctions of major motorways form sweeping loops on the map, the most striking geometric shapes in an otherwise dense residential fabric.
Streets curve along the slopes and valleys of the district, producing an irregular, organic pattern of blocks instead of a regular grid.
Office towers and shopping centres line the main roads, their large footprints showing as broader blocks between the smaller residential streets.

Koteā ko Umraniye
For many Istanbul families, Umraniye is where they built their lives as the city expanded east: the first apartment, the school, the neighbourhood market. A map of its streets marks that personal history in a calm, graphic way.
