Üsküdar lies on the Asian shore of Istanbul, directly across the Bosphorus from the historic peninsula and Beşiktaş. Its waterfront curves north along the strait from the entrance to the Sea of Marmara, lined with piers, mosques and the coastal road. Inland, streets climb steadily uphill, and the map shows a dense web of lanes rather than a regular grid.
Just offshore stands the Maiden's Tower on its small islet, one of the best-known silhouettes in the city. By the main ferry landing, the Mihrimah Sultan Mosque, designed by Mimar Sinan, faces the water. Behind the district, Çamlıca Hill rises as the highest point on this side of the city. The large Çamlıca Mosque, completed in 2019, now stands on top.
Üsküdar is one of the oldest settled parts of Istanbul and was known in antiquity as Chrysopolis. An Üsküdar map poster shows that long history alongside the modern city. The Marmaray rail tunnel has a station beneath the waterfront, and ferry routes fan out across the water toward Europe. The Bosphorus gives the composition a strong, flowing edge.
The shoreline runs along the strait with ferry piers and small coves, a strong curving edge that faces the European side and the historic peninsula across the water.
The tower stands on a tiny islet just off the Üsküdar shore. As a single small shape in open water, it gives the map a precise and recognisable point.
Rising behind the district, the hill interrupts the dense street pattern with parkland and winding roads, and it offers one of the widest views over Istanbul.

Koteā ko Üsküdar
Many Istanbul residents feel a particular loyalty to the Asian side, and Üsküdar is its old heart: ferries at dusk, tea by the water, the view back toward the minarets of the old city. The poster frames that crossing, with the strait running beside the streets.
