Te mapa
Kāndla lies on Kandla Creek at the head of the Gulf of Kutch in Gujarat. The map is dominated by water and flat land, with very few natural features. Tidal creeks branch into mudflats, straight embankments and salt pans divide the ground into large rectangles, and the port's quays, storage tanks and railway sidings form dense geometric blocks by the channel.
The port was developed after 1947, when India needed a major harbour on its western coast after the loss of Karachi. Today it operates as Deendayal Port and is one of the busiest cargo ports in the country. The planned town of Gandhidham grew nearby to serve it. Kandla was also home to India's first export processing zone, set up in the 1960s.
A Kāndla map poster shows an industrial landscape whose own kind of order comes from the tide and from engineering: long jetties, broad roads, perfectly straight rail lines, and the wide, uneven edges of the creek. For people who have worked in shipping, trade or logistics here, it is a very recognisable picture.
Kandla Creek and its side channels branch across the mudflats in irregular, fine lines, giving the coastline a delicate, almost tree-like pattern.
Quays, jetties, storage areas and rail sidings form sharp rectangular blocks along the water, the densest and most regular part of the map.
Large, evenly divided evaporation ponds cover the flat land nearby, adding a grid of straight embankments to the edges of the drawing.

Koteā ko Kāndla
Ports rarely end up on living-room walls, but Kāndla's shapes are graphic and unusual. For anyone whose career or family history is tied to this harbour, the map is a proud and specific reminder.
