Kānūru is part of the Vijayawada urban area in Andhra Pradesh, on the eastern side of the city. From above it is a mix of dense residential colonies, main roads leading into the centre, and pockets of remaining farmland being filled with new housing. The street pattern is irregular, made of many small layouts added one after another.
Vijayawada's landscape is shaped by the Krishna River and the irrigation canals that fan out from it across the delta. Canals and drains cross this part of the city as long straight or gently curving lines, and fields still appear at the edges. Colleges and institutions occupy large plots that show up as open blocks on the map.
