Karlshamn Map Poster & Print
Karlshamn was founded in 1664 under King Charles X Gustav, as part of Sweden's effort to strengthen its hold on newly acquired Blekinge. The town plan from that time still shows on the map. The old centre is a regular grid of blocks sloping down to the harbour, set within the uneven granite coast.
The Mieån river flows through the town into the harbour, dividing the grid with a soft curve. Offshore, the archipelago breaks into small islands and skerries. On one of them, Frisholmen, stands the Kastellet fortress, built to guard the harbour entrance. Karlshamn was also a departure port for emigrants, a history marked by a monument by the water.

Mieån river
The river curves through the town to the harbour. It is the one irregular line that crosses the otherwise orderly centre.

Offshore islands and rocks break up the water south of the town. The fortress island of Frisholmen guards the harbour approach.
