Te mapa
Kas lies in South Darfur, in western Sudan, on the route that runs from Nyala towards Zalingei and the Jebel Marra highlands. From above, the town is a low, spread-out settlement of compounds and open spaces, with streets that follow tracks rather than a formal plan. Around it the land opens into savanna, crossed by seasonal watercourses that fill in the rainy months and dry out for the rest of the year.
The mountains of Jebel Marra rise to the north-west, and their slopes feed the wadis that pass near the town. Like many towns in the region, Kas serves the surrounding villages as a place of trade and services, with roads leading out in several directions across the plain. On a map, the settlement appears as a loose cluster of built areas and paths, very different from the dense grids of larger cities.
A Kas map poster is spare by nature: a few main routes, a scatter of lanes and compounds, and wide open ground around them. It is a meaningful piece for people from the town and for families in the diaspora who want to keep a place close, and it reads especially well in the Sand and Paper styles.
The route between Nyala and Zalingei passes through the town and forms the strongest line on the map, giving the whole composition a clear spine.
Dry riverbeds wind across the plain near the town, appearing as irregular lines that mark where water flows during the rainy season.
Houses and yards sit within fenced or walled compounds separated by open ground, creating a loose, airy texture that is characteristic of towns in Darfur.

Koteā ko Kas
For people from Kas, a map is a way to hold on to a home that may feel distant, to its paths, compounds and the road that leads in and out. A precise drawing of the town keeps that place present.
