Kashima lies on the southwestern shore of the Ariake Sea in Saga Prefecture, Kyushu. On a map the city runs from a flat coastal strip, laced with rice fields and drainage channels, back into forested hills. The town centre gathers along the railway and the coastal road. Smaller settlements follow the rivers that come down from the uplands toward the sea.
The Ariake Sea has one of the largest tidal ranges in Japan, and at low tide broad mudflats appear along Kashima's shore. The city holds a well-known mud festival on them each year. Inland, Yūtoku Inari Shrine climbs a hillside on tall wooden stilts. It is counted among the three great Inari shrines of Japan. Kashima is also known for sake, with an old brewery street at Hizen-Hama.
A Kashima map poster sets two landscapes against each other: the shallow, level edge of the Ariake Sea and the folded hills behind the town. Between them lie the lines of fields, canals and railway. It is a quiet, balanced print that suits anyone who has visited the shrine, walked the brewery street or lived beside the tidal flats.
The coastline faces a sea with an exceptional tidal range. At low tide wide mudflats open up, and they host the city's well-known mud festival.
On the hills west of the centre, the shrine grounds stand on a steep wooded slope, where the flat plain first meets the uplands.
A historic district of sake breweries and merchant houses lies near the coast. Its narrow streets are finer-grained than the modern town around it.

Koteā ko Kashima
The poster suits travellers who found Kashima through its shrine or its sake, and people from Saga who want a restrained picture of home. The coast and hills give the frame a clear structure without needing a single label.
Personalise the title and subtitle, in English or with a romanised place name, and edit the coordinates line. Then choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. The Paper style works particularly well with the soft coastal edge.
