Te mapa
Katagami lies in Akita Prefecture, on the plains north of Akita city, bordering the Sea of Japan coast and the southern edge of the reclaimed Hachirōgata lagoon. The town was formed in 2005 by merging several smaller municipalities, so rather than one centre it has a series of settlements spread across farmland.
Rice is the defining feature of the landscape. From above, the fields form a remarkably regular pattern of rectangles, divided by irrigation channels and farm roads. The Ou Main Line and local roads cross this flat country, linking Katagami with Akita city and the Oga Peninsula to the west.
A Katagami map poster turns this agricultural geometry into a striking design. The grid of paddies gives the print a precise, almost textile texture, while the villages, railway and coast add variety. It is a map of a quiet, working countryside, understated and very clearly Japanese in character.
Paddies divided into neat rectangles cover much of the town, creating a fine, regular pattern that dominates the map and gives it a woven texture.
The southern shore of the former lagoon marks the northern part of the town, where water channels and reclaimed land meet in long, clean lines.
Several small settlements from the merged towns sit among the fields, each forming a compact knot of streets within the open agricultural landscape.

Koteā ko Katagami
Katagami is home for farming families in Akita and for people who left the countryside for Tokyo or abroad. A map of its fields and villages is a calm reminder of seasons, harvests and family ties to the land.
