Te mapa
Keelung occupies a narrow natural harbour on Taiwan's northern coast, surrounded on three sides by steep hills. On a map, the city spreads around the long inlet like fingers, its streets packed onto the thin strips of flat land near the water, while winding roads climb the slopes and tunnels pass beneath them.
The harbour has been a strategic port for centuries, used by the Spanish and the Dutch in the seventeenth century and later developed into one of the island's main gateways. Keelung is also known for its frequent rain, which has earned it the nickname Rain Port, and for the Miaokou night market close to the harbour.
A Keelung map poster traces the busy quays of the inner harbour, the islands and headlands at its mouth, including Heping Island, and the terraced hillside neighbourhoods above. Zhongzheng Park, with its large white Guanyin statue, overlooks the water on the eastern side. The result is a striking composition of steep land and sheltered sea.
A long, narrow inlet reaches deep into the city, lined with quays and piers that give the centre of the map a strong, clear shape.
Steep slopes surround the harbour, and roads wind across them in tight curves, contrasting with the dense straight streets beside the water.
At the harbour mouth, Heping Island and the rocky coast form an irregular edge where the city meets open sea, adding texture to the northern shore.

Koteā ko Keelung
Keelung is where many people from northern Taiwan grew up, worked at sea or boarded a ferry, and a map of its harbour holds onto those associations. It also suits travellers who remember rainy evenings and the night market.
