Te mapa
Khabarovsk stands on the right bank of the Amur, near the point where the Ussuri joins it. The river here is very wide, full of channels and islands, and on a map the water takes up much of the frame. Across from the city, the large Bolshoy Ussuriysky Island lies close to the border with China.
The centre is built on three low ridges running parallel down to the river, divided by two valleys. The main streets follow the ridge tops, while the valleys between them were turned into long green boulevards. This gives the central map a clear, repeated pattern of lines running from the northeast down toward the Amur.
The city was founded in 1858 as a military post. North of the centre, a long road and rail bridge crosses the Amur, and it appears on the 5000 ruble banknote. A Khabarovsk map poster shows the ridges, the boulevards and the vast braided river in a single frame.

Three main streets follow parallel ridges down to the river, with long boulevards laid out in the valleys between them.
The long road and rail bridge carries the Trans-Siberian Railway across the river, a clean, straight line over the water.

Khabarovsk is a city people remember for its wide river and long summer evenings on the embankment. A map with the Amur at its centre is a simple, lasting reminder of the Far East.
