Khairāgarh is a town in Chhattisgarh, in central India, set in a flat agricultural landscape. From above, the old centre is a dense cluster of lanes and small blocks. Roads lead out toward surrounding villages, and the built area soon gives way to fields, ponds and watercourses, a pattern typical of the plains of the Chhattisgarh basin.
The town was once the seat of a princely state, and its royal family is closely tied to its best-known institution: Indira Kala Sangeet Vishwavidyalaya, a university devoted to music and the fine arts, founded in 1956. The campus is a cultural point of reference far beyond the town and draws students of classical music, dance and painting from across India.
