Te mapa
Kimovsk is in the east of the Tula Oblast, a short distance from Donskoy, on the level farmland south of Moscow. Much of it was built in the mid-twentieth century, and its map shows planned origins. The centre is laid out along straight streets and generous blocks rather than the tangle of an older market town.
The town's name comes from the abbreviation for the Communist Youth International, a reminder of when it was founded. Like its neighbours, it grew around coal mining in the Moscow basin. Railway lines and former industrial areas mark its edges, and fields and woods fill the space between it and the next settlements.
A Kimovsk map poster presents a Soviet planned town at its clearest. The orderly blocks at the centre, the housing districts around them and the long roads out into the countryside form a rational, readable composition. It is a good example of how the twentieth century drew towns straight onto open land.
The core of the town is laid out on straight, generous streets from its mid-century planning. It gives the map a disciplined, geometric feel.
Rail lines and old industrial ground from the coal-mining years run along the margins of the town. They form strong linear features on the page.
Fields and woodland surround Kimovsk. The white space on the poster sets off the compact outline of the town.

A map of Kimovsk is a personal keepsake for those who grew up there, and a neat example of Soviet town planning for everyone else. The ordered streets look especially clean in monochrome.
