Te mapa
Kogalym grew up in the late twentieth century to serve the oil fields of the Khanty-Mansi region, and it gained town status in 1985. From above, the difference between planned town and wild land is sharp. A compact block of microdistricts, broad avenues and courtyards sits in wet taiga full of bogs and scattered lakes.
The town is also known well beyond Siberia: its name gave the letter K to Lukoil, the oil company formed from producers in Langepas, Urai and Kogalym. The railway north through the region passes nearby, and roads and pipelines leave the town in long, straight lines toward the fields, clearly separate from the maze of natural water around them.
A Kogalym map poster balances two textures. The residential grid is orderly and clearly drawn, while the land around it breaks into countless small lakes and meandering channels. In black and white, the northern town reads as a small geometric island in a large, irregular landscape.
Large residential blocks set around courtyards, divided by wide avenues, give the centre the regular, planned look typical of Siberian towns built in the oil era.
All around the town, the taiga breaks up into small lakes and wetland channels, a scattered pattern that fills the outer poster with fine irregular shapes.
Straight roads and corridors run out of town across the wetlands toward the oil fields, the clearest signs of why Kogalym was built.

Koteā ko Kogalym
Many people came to Kogalym to work, stayed and raised families, and many have since moved on. A map of the town is a record of that northern chapter: the courtyard where you lived, the route to work and the lakes at the edge of town.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates, for example with the year you arrived, and pick Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. HD files cost $9 and include six print sizes, or you can order a printed poster.
