Te mapa
Kotel’nich stands on the Vyatka River in Kirov Oblast, one of the older towns of the region. It sits on the river's bank, and from above its street pattern follows the line of the water, with a central grid set back from a steep slope. The river swings through a wide valley of meadows and forest below.
The town is known far beyond the region for its paleontological site. Rich deposits of Permian reptile fossils have been found in the riverbanks nearby, and a local museum displays many of the finds. Kotelnich is also a railway town, on a line that forms part of the northern route of the Trans-Siberian.
A Kotel’nich map poster shows a town defined by its river. The broad curve of the Vyatka, the town grid on the bank and the railway lines crossing the map create a strong and varied composition. It suits anyone who knows the northern forests or has an interest in deep time.
The river loops through a wide valley beside the town, its broad curve and sandbanks forming the most prominent natural shape on the map.
Streets are set out along the high river bank, forming a grid that follows the edge of the valley and looks out across the water.
Rail lines cross the town and meet near its edge, drawing long straight lines that contrast with the curves of the river.
