Te mapa
Kotka is on the southeastern coast of Finland, on the Gulf of Finland. Its centre is built on Kotka Island at the mouth of the Kymi River. From above, the city is a set of islands and peninsulas joined by bridges, with inlets reaching into the land and small islands scattered off the shore.
The port shapes much of the map. Kotka and nearby Hamina together make up Finland's largest port, and long quays, container yards and railway sidings take up large, geometric areas along the waterfront, next to the orderly grid of the island centre.
The city is known for its parks, including the Sapokka water garden, and for the Maretarium aquarium of Baltic fish. Upstream on the Kymi, at Langinkoski, is the fishing lodge of Tsar Alexander III. A Kotka map poster shows how closely the city is tied to the water.
The city centre sits on Kotka Island in a tidy grid. Water surrounds it, and bridges link it to the mainland districts.
Long straight quays and yards form hard geometric edges along the shore, very different from the ragged natural coastline nearby.
The Kymi splits into branches as it reaches the sea, leaving islands and channels that make the city's outline complex and detailed.

Koteā ko Kotka
Kotka is a good choice for people who grew up by its harbour, sailed among its islands, or have ties to Finnish maritime life. The balance of water and land makes it an especially graphic map.
