Te mapa
Kumta sits on the Karnataka coast in Uttara Kannada district, where a narrow strip of lowland runs between the Arabian Sea and the forested slopes of the Western Ghats. From above the town is squeezed between two strong edges: the straight western beach and the rising, wrinkled ground inland.
Water shapes the rest. The Aghanashini River reaches the sea south of town through a wide estuary with mudflats, channels and small islands, and smaller creeks wind in from the coast. The national highway runs north to south along the coastal strip, and Kumta's streets branch off it towards the shore and the hills.
The town was once known for the cotton shipped from its harbour, which carried Kumta's name to distant markets. A Kumta map poster shows the setting behind that trade: a straight coastline, a branching estuary and a compact town placed between the sea and the ghats.
South of town the river widens into a broad estuary of channels and mudflats. On the map it breaks the straight coastline into an intricate pattern of water and land.
A single main road follows the coast north to south, forming the town's spine. Side streets reach off it towards the beach on one side and the hills on the other.
The long western shore and the rising ground to the east frame the town from both sides, giving the poster a clear sense of a place held between two landscapes.
