Te mapa
Kuroishi lies in western Aomori Prefecture, on the eastern edge of the Tsugaru plain not far from Hirosaki. On a map the town is a compact centre of streets surrounded by farmland, with orchards spreading across the lower slopes and mountains rising to the east toward the Hakkōda range and Lake Towada.
The town is known for its komise, covered wooden walkways built along the fronts of old merchant houses to protect pedestrians from deep winter snow. The surviving stretch along Nakamachi is among the best preserved in Japan and gives the historic core an arcade-like character that is felt more on foot than seen from above.
Apples are the other defining feature: the Tsugaru area is Japan's leading apple-growing region, and orchards shape the pattern of the land around the town. A Kuroishi map poster records the grid of the old centre and the looser rural roads beyond, a quiet composition that suits the snow-country character of the place.
The historic Nakamachi street, with its covered wooden walkways, runs through the old centre, and its line is easy to locate on the town map.
Apple orchards cover the gentle slopes around the town, giving the edges of the map a fine patchwork of small fields and narrow farm lanes.
Toward the east the land rises into forested hills and hot-spring valleys, where roads thin out and the map becomes quiet and open.
