Te mapa
La Guaira sits on a thin shelf of land where the mountains of the Cordillera de la Costa drop almost straight into the Caribbean. On a map the town reads as a long ribbon: the port basin and its breakwaters along the water, a tight cluster of older streets behind them, and the street pattern thinning out abruptly to the south where the slopes take over, leaving little room for anything else.
For centuries this has been the main seaport for Caracas, which lies on the far side of the mountain range, and the country's principal international airport sits along the same stretch of coast at neighbouring Maiquetía. The coast here is also remembered for the devastating floods and landslides of December 1999, which reshaped parts of the shoreline and the river mouths that cut down from the hills.
A La Guaira map poster turns that tension between sea and slope into a clean graphic. Piers and quays give the upper part of the frame hard, geometric lines along the water, while the older quarter adds a finer grain of short, irregular streets. Toward the bottom of the print the map empties out where the mountains rise, and that white space says as much about the place as the streets do.
The harbour takes up much of the waterfront, and its straight quays and protective breakwaters are the most geometric shapes on the whole map, set against the softer curve of the coast.
Behind the port lies the older part of town, a compact knot of narrow streets from the colonial era that contrasts with the broad, engineered lines of the docks.
To the south the streets stop almost abruptly where the coastal range begins. The line between built-up land and empty slope is one of the clearest features of the composition.

Koteā ko La Guaira
People who have sailed through, flown into Maiquetía or grown up between the port and the hills tend to recognise this coastline immediately. Framed, it is a quiet reminder of a place defined by water on one side and mountains on the other.
