Te mapa
La Oroya sits at about 3,700 metres in the central Andes of Peru, where the Yauli River joins the Mantaro. It grew up as a railway junction on the Central Andean line and as the site of a large metallurgical complex that processed ores from the surrounding mines. For many years the smelter made La Oroya known as one of the most polluted places in the world, a reputation the town still carries.
From above, the terrain explains everything. Streets and buildings are forced into long, thin strips along the valley floors, and steep, bare slopes rise on either side. The rivers, the railway and the main highway all squeeze through the same narrow corridors, winding together through the mountains. The smelter complex makes a dense block of industrial shapes along the water.
A La Oroya map poster captures a town shaped entirely by mountains. The layout is linear and branching, a Y of settlement following the rivers rather than spreading out. In monochrome, the valleys become a stark, graphic form, a portrait of a hard-working place high in the Andes.
The Yauli and Mantaro rivers meet here. The town spreads along both valleys and forms a branching shape at the centre of the map.
The railway, the highway and the streets run side by side along the narrow valley floor, packed between steep mountainsides that stay almost empty on the map.
The metallurgical works occupy a large riverside area. Their heavy industrial blocks stand out clearly against the thin residential strips.
