La Puente lies in the eastern San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles County. From above, it is a typical Southern California suburb: long arterial roads in a loose grid, blocks of single-family homes, and commercial strips along the main boulevards. The Pomona Freeway runs along the south side, and the Puente Hills rise beyond it.
The name comes from a bridge built by members of the Spanish Portolá expedition in 1769 to cross a creek in the area. The land later became part of Rancho La Puente, and the town grew from farmland into a residential community during the twentieth century.
