Labuleng, better known as Labrang, is a monastic town in Xiahe County in southern Gansu, on the edge of the Tibetan plateau. It grew around Labrang Monastery, founded in 1709 and one of the six great monasteries of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism. The monastery is still the heart of the town, and its monks and pilgrims give it a character unlike anywhere else in the region.
On a map the setting is dramatic. The Daxia River runs along the valley floor, and the town stretches beside it in a long, narrow band between steep slopes. The monastery complex fills a large part of the valley. Its halls, courtyards and residences form a dense block, and the rest of the town continues along the road on either side.
A Labuleng map poster captures the unusual shape of a settlement defined by a monastery, a river and mountains. A pilgrim circuit lined with long rows of prayer wheels runs around the monastery. It is often described as one of the longest in the Tibetan world. Its loop, walked clockwise by pilgrims every day, is clear on the map.

A kora lined with prayer wheels circles the monastery. On the map it appears as a loop around the complex, the route pilgrims walk each day.
