Te mapa
Tianshui is a valley city. It stretches east to west along the Wei River and its tributaries in south-east Gansu, and because the hills on either side are steep, the city is long and thin. Two main urban districts, Qinzhou and Maiji, lie along the valley floor and are joined by roads and rail that follow the water.
The city has deep roots in Chinese tradition. It is regarded as the legendary birthplace of Fuxi, a mythical founding figure, and the Fuxi Temple stands in the old part of town. South-east of the city, the Maijishan Grottoes contain Buddhist carvings made over many centuries in a steep, isolated peak.
A Tianshui map poster makes the geography easy to read. A ribbon of streets runs along the river, pressed in by slopes that appear as open space on the map. Side valleys carry smaller roads into the hills, and the whole city takes the shape of the terrain rather than a planned grid.

Qinzhou and Maiji form two urban centres along the valley, linked by roads and rail that follow the valley floor between the hills.
Steep loess hills close in on both sides, so building stops abruptly. Side valleys carry narrow roads and small settlements into the high ground.

Koteā ko Tianshui
Tianshui's elongated shape makes it one of the more unusual city maps in China, a clear line of streets following a river. For people from Gansu it is instantly recognisable.
