Te mapa
Lae spreads along the northern shore of the Huon Gulf, beside the wide braided mouth of the Markham River. On the map the coastline and the harbour form the southern edge, the river's gravel channels spread to the east, and the city's suburbs extend inland along a few main roads towards the valley and the mountains beyond.
Lae is the country's main industrial centre and its largest port, and the Highlands Highway begins here, carrying goods up to the interior. The city was an important base during the Second World War. It is also remembered as the place where Amelia Earhart and Fred Noonan took off in 1937 on the flight from which they never arrived.
A Lae map poster brings together sea, river and city in an unusual balance. The broad shapes of the gulf and the Markham delta hold the frame, while the street network, with its curving suburban roads and the botanic gardens near the centre, fills the land between them in finer detail.
The river reaches the sea east of the city in a wide spread of braided channels and gravel bars, a rough textured shape beside the smooth coastline.
The harbour and wharves sit on the gulf shore at the southern edge of the city, the start of the main supply route into the highlands.
A large green area near the centre holds the Lae Botanic Gardens and the war cemetery, an open space among the city's streets.
