Lagoa Nova sits in the interior of Rio Grande do Norte, on the elevated ground of the Serra de Santana. From above, the town is a modest cluster of streets on the plateau, with roads stretching outward across the upland and dropping toward the lower semi-arid land of the sertão. The map is spare, a small urban shape surrounded by wide open space.
The name means new lagoon, a reminder of how much water matters in this region, where small reservoirs and seasonal ponds appear on the map as scattered shapes in the countryside.
