Laḩij lies on the coastal plain of southern Yemen, a short distance north of Aden. It sits in the delta of Wadi Tuban, where seasonal floods have long been spread across fields for farming. For centuries the town was the seat of a local sultanate, and it served as a political and agricultural centre for the region. Laḩij is also known in Yemen and beyond for its musical tradition, with songs and poets associated with the town and its surroundings.
