Lai Châu is the capital of one of Vietnam’s most mountainous provinces, in the far northwest of the country. The present town is relatively new, developed in the 2000s when the provincial seat was moved here, and from above that shows clearly in its broad, planned avenues.
The town fills a valley floor surrounded by high ridges, and the map makes the contrast sharp: a grid of wide roads in the centre, then steep, empty hillsides almost immediately beyond. A Lai Châu map poster captures that planned core set into a landscape that barely allows it room.
