Lạng Sơn lies in a valley in northeastern Vietnam, close to the Chinese border. The Kỳ Cùng River winds through the city in wide bends, and the settlement spreads out on both banks, surrounded by limestone hills that rise sharply from the flat valley floor.
The city has long been an important crossing point on the route between Hanoi and China, and the Đồng Đăng border gate is only a short distance to the north. Main roads and a railway line follow the valley, and trade has shaped much of the city's growth.
Tam Thanh cave, set in one of the limestone hills, is among its best-known sights, and Mẫu Sơn mountain rises further to the east. A Lạng Sơn map poster shows the looping river, the compact centre and the steep hills that surround it.
