Thái Nguyên sits roughly eighty kilometres north of Hanoi, where the flat Red River delta begins to rise into the hills of the northeast. The Cầu River curves along the edge of the city, and on a map its looping course sets the limit of the dense centre, with bridges reaching across to quieter districts on the far bank and farmland beyond.
Inland from the river, the street pattern mixes long straight roads laid out in the second half of the twentieth century with denser pockets around markets and older quarters. To the south, the large grounds of the steel works form a broad industrial block. A Thái Nguyên map poster shows these contrasts clearly: open river loops, a planned spine and a patchwork of compact neighbourhoods.
The city is known across Vietnam for two things. Its iron and steel complex, begun with foreign assistance around 1960, was the country's first, and the hills around the city produce some of Vietnam's most prized green tea, especially from the Tân Cương area. To the west, the reservoir of Núi Cốc Lake adds a large expanse of water beyond the urban edge.
The river winds past the city in wide bends, giving the map its most fluid lines. Bridges cross it at intervals, linking the centre to districts on the opposite bank.
The iron and steel works occupy a large site marked by rail sidings and broad industrial plots, a geometric contrast to the finer residential streets nearby.
At the western edge, roads thin out into the rolling slopes of the tea-growing area around Tân Cương, where the map gives way to scattered lanes and open ground.
