Hạ Long faces Ha Long Bay, and the map shows that immediately. The city stretches along the northern shore of the bay. It is divided into two main parts, Bãi Cháy to the west and Hòn Gai to the east, by the narrow Cửa Lục strait. The Bãi Cháy Bridge spans the gap and ties the two halves together.
The bay itself is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, known for its many limestone islands and islets rising from the water. On the map they appear as a dense scatter of irregular shapes that thins out as it spreads south and east from the shore, like a separate landscape just beyond the city's edge.
