Te mapa
Lappeenranta sits on the southern shore of Lake Saimaa, the largest lake in Finland, in South Karelia near the Russian border. On the map the water dominates: bays and islands spread across the north, and the city's streets line up along the shore before extending south into residential districts, forest and the university campus.
Beside the harbour, on a promontory above the water, stands the fortress, a group of old military buildings and museums within earthworks dating back to the eighteenth century. In summer the harbour hosts a large sand sculpture exhibition built anew each year. Nearby, the city centre follows a regular grid of broad, rectangular blocks.
The Saimaa Canal begins just outside the city and connects the lake system with the Gulf of Finland at Vyborg, running through Russian territory for much of its length. A Lappeenranta map poster shows the city where land and lake meet, with the harbour, the fortress and the start of the canal all drawn in a single frame.
Deep bays and scattered islands of Lake Saimaa fill the northern part of the map, creating an intricate outline of water and land.
The old fortress sits on a promontory above the harbour, its earthworks and buildings forming a compact, angular shape by the water.
The canal leaves the lake near the city and heads south in a narrow, straight line, an engineered contrast to the lake's natural curves.

Koteā ko Lappeenranta
Lappeenranta holds meaning for LUT University students and graduates, for summer cottage owners on Saimaa and for families from South Karelia. The map shows the lake and the city together, which is how most people remember them.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, and choose from five styles; Blueprint and Noir both make the lake's outline especially clear. HD files for $9 include six print sizes, from 30×40 cm to 24×36″.
