Te mapa
Laukkai lies in the far northeast of Shan State, a short distance from Myanmar's border with China's Yunnan Province. It serves as the main town of the Kokang Self-Administered Zone, a mountainous area whose population is largely ethnic Kokang, a Chinese-speaking community. The terrain around the town is steep and broken, and the street plan has to work around it.
From above, Laukkai reads as a settlement fitted into lower ground between hills, with roads following the contours and branching up the side slopes. The pattern is irregular rather than planned, shaped by the fall of the land and the routes that lead toward the border. Beyond the built-up area, the map opens into green hills and scattered villages connected by winding tracks.
The town has changed a great deal over recent decades and was at the center of fighting in the region in 2023 and 2024. A Laukkai map poster sets politics aside and records the place as geography: a dense cluster of streets held between mountain ridges, drawn in simple lines that let the land itself lead the design.
The main built-up area gathers on the lower ground, with the densest blocks concentrated where the terrain opens out enough to allow building.
Roads leaving the center curve with the slopes instead of running straight, giving the map a loose, organic pattern typical of highland towns.
The frontier with Yunnan lies just beyond the town, and the routes heading that way form some of the most prominent lines on the map.

For families with roots in Kokang, or anyone who has lived or worked in this corner of Shan State, the map offers a calm way to remember a place that is often discussed only in the news. It keeps the focus on streets and hills.
