Te mapa
Launceston sits at the head of the Tamar estuary, where the North Esk and South Esk rivers join. From above, the city climbs the hills on both sides of the water, and the streets follow the contours in long curves and switchbacks. The compact central grid sits on flatter ground close to the confluence, sharply defined against the slopes around it.
Founded in 1806, Launceston is one of Australia's oldest cities, and the town centre still has many Victorian and Edwardian buildings. Its best-known natural landmark is Cataract Gorge, where the South Esk runs through a steep, narrow rock channel just minutes from the city streets. On a map the gorge appears as a dark, twisting cut on the city's western side.
A Launceston map poster brings together a river city and a hill town. The broad Tamar reaching north toward Bass Strait, the tight grid near the waterfront, the gorge and the slopes crossed by residential streets all combine into one balanced, strongly contoured composition.
The South Esk squeezes through a steep, narrow gorge just west of the centre. It forms a sinuous line that stands out against the regular streets nearby.
Two rivers meet in the city and widen into the Tamar estuary, which runs north toward Bass Strait as a broad band of open water.
Residential roads curve along the slopes above the valley. Their contour-following lines contrast with the straight grid of the historic centre.

Koteā ko Launceston
For Tasmanians, or anyone who has walked the gorge trail or lived on one of Launceston's hills, this map has real character. The water and slopes make it one of the more sculptural city maps.
