Te mapa
Le Tampon covers a long strip of Réunion's southern flank. Its territory rises from warm country near the coast to the cool uplands of the Plaine des Cafres, well over a thousand metres higher. On a map it reads as a ribbon: the town stretches uphill along the main road, and settlement thins out as the slope steepens.
Streets branch sideways from the main axis and follow the contours, and ravines cut straight downhill between them. This mix of cross-slope roads and downhill gullies gives the map a fine, combed texture. The upper part of the commune is the usual approach to the Piton de la Fournaise, one of the most active volcanoes in the world.
A Le Tampon map poster suits islanders and anyone who has driven the route up to the volcano at dawn. Seen from above, the island's geography becomes simple and readable: a road climbing a mountainside, a town strung along it, and a landscape that keeps changing with altitude.
The main road climbs steadily from the lower town toward the high plains, and the built-up area follows it as a long, narrow band.
Steep ravines cut down the slope between neighbourhoods. On the print they appear as fine parallel breaks in the street network.
Above the town, the road continues across the Plaine des Cafres toward the Piton de la Fournaise. The map opens out into sparse, high ground.

Koteā ko Le Tampon
A map of Le Tampon captures something photographs rarely show, which is how a whole community is laid out along a mountainside. It works well for anyone from the Hauts of Réunion who now lives elsewhere.
You can edit the title, subtitle and coordinates, for example to add a family name or the date of a hike to the volcano. Choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Noir brings out the ravines strongly.
