Lhokseumawe lies on the northern coast of Aceh, facing the Strait of Malacca. From above, the city is a strip of settlement along the shore, with a port, estuaries and fishponds breaking up the coastline and farmland stretching inland.
For decades the city was known for the natural gas industry around the nearby Arun field, and the large industrial and harbour areas built for it still show clearly on the map. These big planned sites look very different from the finer residential streets around them.
Like much of coastal Aceh, the region was affected by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. A Lhokseumawe map poster shows a city defined by its coast, with a varied shoreline on one side and a network of roads and waterways running inland.
