Linfen Map Poster & Print

Linfen sits in the Fen River basin in southern Shanxi, a long valley between the Lüliang Mountains to the west and the Taiyue Mountains to the east. The Fen runs north to south through the city, and the urban area follows it. From above, the city forms a band along the valley floor, with main roads running parallel to the river.

Linfen is one of the oldest places of settlement in China. Tradition holds that the legendary sage-king Yao had his capital here, and the city is sometimes called Yaodu. Its modern growth has come largely from coal and heavy industry, which spread new districts across the flat basin floor.

Within Linfen's wider administrative area lies Hukou Waterfall, where the Yellow River narrows sharply and pours over a rocky drop. It is one of the best-known natural sights in northern China. A Linfen map poster shows the city's core structure: a river down the middle and streets set between mountains.

The Fen River

The river runs north to south through the city and sets the direction of the whole map. Bridges cross it at intervals.

02

Valley floor grid

Main roads run parallel to the river along the flat basin, with cross streets between them. They form a long, fairly regular pattern.

03

Mountain edges

Ranges to the east and west close in the basin. The dense city gives way to sparse roads as the ground rises.
