Hancheng is in eastern Shaanxi, where loess terraces drop toward the Yellow River along the border with Shanxi. On the map, the city sits in a basin between the uplands and the river. The old town is a tight cluster of narrow lanes, and to the east a newer, more regular grid of wide boulevards reaches toward the water.
The contrast between the two halves is what makes this place interesting from above. The historic quarter keeps lanes and courtyard blocks from the Ming and Qing periods. The modern districts are laid out in large, even rectangles. Around the edges, gullies and terraced slopes cut into the loess, and the drawing turns into a fine web of paths and field lines.
Hancheng is known as the home of Sima Qian, the Han-dynasty historian who wrote the Records of the Grand Historian, and his temple and tomb stand on a ridge south of the city. The nearby village of Dangjiacun is famous for its well-preserved courtyard houses. A Hancheng map poster shows a small city with a very long written past.
A dense tangle of narrow lanes and courtyard blocks, clearly finer in texture than the wide avenues of the districts that grew up around it.
To the east the land falls toward the broad Yellow River, which marks the provincial border and gives the map a strong edge of open water and floodplain.
Gullies and terraced slopes around the city appear as irregular, branching lines, the typical pattern of the loess plateau landscape in this part of Shaanxi.

This map suits people who care about Chinese history or have roots in Shaanxi. The old lanes set against the modern grid show how the city has changed, in a way a photograph can't.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line with a name, a date or a line of text, then choose from five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Each one handles the fine old-town lanes differently.
