Te mapa
Tongchuan lies north of Xi'an on the edge of the Loess Plateau, and its map is dictated by terrain. The older part of the city occupies narrow valleys between steep loess ridges, so streets run in long, thin ribbons following the watercourses. From above, the built-up area looks like a series of branches rather than a single compact centre.
To the south, a newer district was built on flatter ground, with a regular grid of wide roads and apartment blocks that contrasts clearly with the valley town. Railways and highways connect the two parts. A Tongchuan map poster shows both halves of the city: the winding, constrained settlements of the mining era and the orderly planned blocks of recent decades.
Tongchuan developed as a coal-mining centre for Shaanxi, and much of its twentieth-century growth followed the mines. The area has a much older history too: the Yaozhou kilns at Huangbao produced celebrated celadon wares for centuries, and the city is associated with Sun Simiao, the Tang-dynasty physician honoured on nearby Mount Yaowang.
The old city fills the floors of narrow valleys, so roads and buildings form slender strips between empty ridges, an unusual and striking pattern on a map.
On flatter land to the south, broad avenues and large rectangular blocks make up a modern planned area, the most geometric part of the poster.
Between the settlements, heavily eroded loess terrain leaves wide empty spaces crossed only by a few winding roads, framing the city's branching shape.
