Liping is the seat of Liping County in the Qiandongnan region of Guizhou Province, in southwestern China. The area is mountainous, and from above the town fits itself into a valley, its streets stretched along the level ground while steep, forested slopes rise on either side.
Liping County is one of the heartlands of the Dong people, known for their wooden drum towers and covered wind-and-rain bridges. The county includes Zhaoxing, one of the largest and most visited Dong villages, with several drum towers standing among its wooden houses. The surrounding hills are shaped by rice terraces and small settlements.
