Liuping Map Poster & Print

Liuping lies in eastern Gansu, in the landscape of the Loess Plateau. This is a region of deep valleys, eroded ridges and terraced fields cut into soft yellow soil. Towns here tend to follow the valley floors, so the map shows a settlement stretched along its main roads rather than spread out evenly.

The loess country of Gansu has been farmed for thousands of years, and its terraced hillsides are one of the most recognisable rural landscapes in northern China. Small towns such as Liuping act as local centres for the villages scattered across the surrounding ridges.

A Liuping map poster shows how the land sets the rules. The streets follow the valley, and the roads leading out of town wind along gullies and up onto the ridges. The result is an organic, branching composition, quite different from the grids of China's plains.

01

Valley-floor town

The built-up area stretches along the valley bottom, where flat land for building is easiest to find in loess country.

02

Winding ridge roads

Roads leaving the town twist up gullies and along ridges, drawing long branching lines across the map.

03

Scattered villages

Small clusters of settlement dot the surrounding hills, connected to the town by thin rural roads.

He mapa ʻe maʻuhiga

For families from Liuping, a map of the town and its valley is a direct way to remember home. The branching roads and valley shapes also make an attractive, almost natural pattern for any wall.

The title, subtitle and coordinates line can be personalised. Choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Sand pairs naturally with the colours of the loess landscape.
