Longshan Map Poster & Print
Longshan is the seat of Longling County in Baoshan, in the far west of Yunnan province, not far from the border with Myanmar. The town lies in a valley among ranges that fold this part of the province into high ridges and deep river gorges. On a map, the built-up area follows the valley floor, with roads climbing out along the contours of the surrounding hills.
The terrain is so steep that slope, not a planned grid, sets the street pattern. Main roads curve to follow the valley, and smaller lanes branch off onto narrower ground. Farmland and hamlets spread across the lower hillsides. The dense town against the switchback roads beyond gives the drawing an unusually sculptural feel.
The county lies on the route of the historic Burma Road, the wartime supply line built through these mountains in the late 1930s, and some of the fiercest fighting of 1944 took place nearby.
