Te mapa
Lorton is a community in southern Fairfax County, Virginia, near the Potomac and bounded on the south by the Occoquan River. Its map is typical of suburban northern Virginia: Interstate 95 and the railway run through it from north to south, and on both sides curving residential streets, cul-de-sacs and patches of woodland fill the land.
For most of the twentieth century Lorton was known for the prison complex that the District of Columbia ran here. After it closed, the land became a new neighbourhood, parkland and the Workhouse Arts Center. Lorton is also the northern terminal of Amtrak's Auto Train, which carries passengers and their cars to Florida.
A Lorton map poster brings together these different layers: the straight lines of the highway and railway, the looping roads of newer housing, and the river and inlets at the southern edge. It gives a clear picture of how the community is laid out.
The interstate and the railway run next to each other through the middle of Lorton. On the poster they form a strong north–south axis that divides the map in two.
The river forms the southern edge of the community before joining the Potomac. Its winding shoreline and inlets bring open water into the lower part of the design.
The former reformatory grounds, now homes, parks and an arts centre, keep their own separate street pattern. This area stands out clearly from the surrounding subdivisions.
