Te mapa
Luang Prabang occupies a narrow peninsula in northern Laos at the confluence of the Mekong and the Nam Khan. From above, the old town is a slim tongue of land with a few long parallel streets running along its length and short lanes linking the two riverbanks. Mount Phousi rises in the middle, and the forested hills beyond frame the wide curves of the Mekong.
The former royal capital was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995 for its blend of traditional Lao architecture and French colonial buildings. Dozens of Buddhist monasteries are spread through the town, including Wat Xieng Thong near the tip of the peninsula. Every morning monks walk the streets to receive alms.
A Luang Prabang map poster is defined by its rivers. Two bodies of water hold the old town between them, bridges cross the Nam Khan, and the Mekong sweeps past in a broad arc. Few towns have such a clear shape, and in monochrome it reads almost like a calligraphic stroke.
At the tip of the peninsula the Nam Khan meets the Mekong, near Wat Xieng Thong. It is the point where the whole composition converges.
The small hill in the centre of the old town is ringed by streets and paths, and the stairs to its summit temple link the two riverbanks.
A few long streets run the length of the peninsula, lined with monasteries and old houses and crossed by short lanes down to the water.

Luang Prabang stays with people long after a visit, whether they remember the morning alms, the view from Phousi or the evening light on the Mekong. A map of the peninsula makes a quiet and very recognisable souvenir.
