Luoping lies in the mountainous northeast of Chongqing Municipality, in the rugged country around the Three Gorges. The terrain decides everything here. On a map, the settlement follows the narrow valley floors, and roads wind in long switchbacks where the slopes allow. There is no room for a grid. Streets bend with the land.
This part of Chongqing is known for its deep valleys, terraced hillsides and the river gorges that cut through the ranges towards the Yangtze. Small towns like Luoping grew up where the flat ground was just wide enough to build on. Around them the land rises quickly into forest and farmland.
